GB 7258 and Brake Testing of In-Service Vehicles in China
GB 7258 is the Chinese mandatory standard for the safety of in-service motor vehicles. Braking is one of the items it governs, and the bench method it relies on is the reason Chinese inspection lanes are built the way they are.
What GB 7258 is
GB 7258, "Safety specifications for power-driven vehicles operating on roads", is a mandatory national standard. It applies to vehicles already in use rather than to type approval, and it covers the safety items a vehicle has to keep in working order to stay on the road — braking among them.
Because it is mandatory and enforced at inspection, it is the document that shapes the equipment market in China. A machine that cannot produce the measurements GB 7258 asks for is not sellable into a domestic inspection station, whatever else it can do.
How braking is assessed on the bench
The bench method uses a roller reaction-force brake tester. Each axle is driven onto rollers, the brake is applied, and the reaction force at each wheel is captured. The values that matter are the braking force per wheel, the balance between left and right on the same axle, and the residual braking force with the brake released.
The result is judged against the requirement for that vehicle category, and the efficiency is expressed relative to the load on the axle. Where the bench method cannot be applied — for a vehicle that cannot be driven onto the rollers, or a category the bench does not cover — a road test measuring stopping distance or deceleration is used instead.
The practical consequence for station design is that the brake tester cannot be specified in isolation. It needs the axle load measurement in the same bay, and the lane sequencing has to give the vehicle room to build and release brake pressure cleanly.
- Roller reaction-force brake tester sized for the heaviest axle the station is licensed for.
- Axle or wheel load measurement in the same station, not a nominal figure from the plate.
- Per-wheel force retained so left-right imbalance can be judged.
- Residual drag measured with the brake released.
- Road-test capability available for the cases the bench cannot cover.
The equipment set a GB-referenced station is built around
A Chinese comprehensive inspection line is assembled from a recognisable set: roller brake tester, axle and wheel load meter, side-slip tester, speedometer tester, headlamp tester, suspension tester, chassis gap or play detector, and for the environmental stream a gas analyser and an opacimeter or chassis dynamometer depending on the vehicle class.
That set is familiar to buyers well beyond China because it maps closely onto what most national inspection regimes ask for. The machines are the same category; the pass limits, the report format and the language are not.
What changes on export
The most common mistake when a Chinese-built line is exported is to leave the software configured for the domestic limits and the domestic report. The hardware arrives and works; the station then fails its acceptance inspection because the report does not match what the local authority expects.
Two things have to be re-done for every destination: the limit values and defect logic have to be configurable to the local rule, and the report has to be produced in the form the local authority accepts — which sometimes means a specific layout, sometimes a data export, sometimes both.
The second common mistake is treating GB limits as if they were an international benchmark. They are the Chinese requirement for Chinese in-service vehicles. A tender in another market that quotes them has usually copied the wrong document.
Common questions
Is GB 7258 the same as a type-approval regulation?
No. GB 7258 governs vehicles in use — the safety items a vehicle has to maintain to stay on the road. Type approval of a new vehicle type is a separate process under different standards.
Can a line built to GB 7258 be used in another country?
The hardware generally can. The software configuration, the pass limits and the report format have to be adapted to the local regulation, and that work should be part of the order rather than an afterthought.
Why do Chinese inspection lanes rely so heavily on roller brake testers?
Because the bench method is the primary route in the standard for the vehicle categories it covers. A road test is used where the bench cannot be applied, not as the default.
Working to this requirement on a live project?
Send the vehicle classes, the daily volume and the standard the tender references. We will reply with the station list, the capacity each machine needs, and the report format the authority will accept.
